Common Questions About Garage Door Repair & Replacement

First: Do not run the opener if a roller is out. It will bend the track and damage panels.

If the door is ONLY slightly out at the bottom:
  1. Unplug the opener

  2. Clamp vise grips on the track below the roller (to keep the door from dropping)

  3. With the door fully closed, use pliers to slightly open the track lip

  4. Guide the roller back into the track

  5. Tap the track back into shape with a rubber mallet

Do NOT try this if:
  • The door is crooked

  • A cable is loose or off the drum

  • A spring is broken

  • The door is halfway up

In those cases → South Bay Garage Doors. The door can fall.

Common causes:

1. Cable slipped off the drum

Most common. One side lifts higher than the other → door goes crooked.

2. Broken extension spring (one side)

One side has tension, the other doesn’t.

3. Bent track

Usually from impact (car bump, forcing the door).

4. Worn rollers

Rollers pop out and cause binding.

5. Loose hardware

Track bolts loosen over time and shift alignment.

6. Obstruction in the track

Small debris can cause the door to jump the track.

Signs include the door looking uneven or tilted, rollers out of the tracks, difficulty opening or closing, scraping or grinding noises, or the door getting stuck partway.

Pulling the red cord does not put the door off track, it only disconnects the opener.

To reconnect:

Method 1 (most common):
  1. Make sure the door is fully closed

  2. Pull the red cord toward the door (this resets the trolley)

  3. Run the opener

  4. The carriage will automatically re-engage

Method 2 (manual lock-in):

Some models let you slide the trolley until it clicks back into the carriage.

Not always. If only one track section is damaged, it can often be repaired or replaced independently. However, we will inspect both tracks to ensure overall system integrity and proper alignment.
